Somat Engineering, Inc. is an award-winning technical services firm, based in Detroit, MI, with satellite offices in the US and abroad, including Washington, DC.
We combine research, engineering and innovative thinking to deliver customized information technology products and services to both government and commercial organizations. We leverage over 20 years of analytical and operational discipline developed by tackling complex engineering problems on critical infrastructure projects to assist our clients in selected areas of information technology.
Somat serves a variety of sectors, including defense, law enforcement, transportation, utilities, financial services and healthcare at the federal, state and municipal level.
The firm is eligible as a US SBA 8(a) Business to participate in various programs for contracting opportunities throughout the Federal Government.

G. Ramanujam - President and CEO
G. “Ram” Ramanujam joined Somat Engineering in 1989, shortly after earning his Masters in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University. In 2000, he became the President and CEO of the firm and has led Somat’s successful expansion into new geographic sectors and into new areas of expertise, such as information technology.
Under Mr. Ramanujam’s leadership, the firm preserves the integrity of our founders through accountability, quality in workmanship and dedication to our clients.
Arpan Patel - Managing Director, Technology Solutions
Mr. Patel directs Somat's Federal Information Engineering practice in Washington, DC. He has over 17 years of technology, financial advisory/analysis and operations experience.
He began his career as an investment banker at leading firms including Lehman Brothers, Lazard Frères, Wasserstein Perella and Credit Suisse First Boston, advising leading corporations and financial buyers on complex financings and M&A transactions exceeding $5 billion.
Since 1999, he has gained significant operational experience and insight as a technology and financial services entrepreneur. He previously cofounded eFrontiers, a pioneering online asset management platform for institutional investors, and Plans365, a recognized developer of online personal finance and collaboration solutions.
Mr. Patel holds a BA in economics from The Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from The University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business.
Mark Crawford – Technology Solutions Manager
Mr. Crawford is the chief technology officer and information architect at Somat and possesses over 15 years of engineering, information systems and software development experience. He has worked on innovative technologies in wireless communications, computer simulation, information management and vehicle control and dynamics.
Prior to joining Somat, he was a product design engineer at Ford Motor Company for nine years. With his significant software and product development experience, he engineered a multimillion-dollar cost savings on the Ford Explorer and developed a novel software program for knowledge-based engineering. He also received several technical awards during his time at Ford and was named “Black Engineer of the Year” by GEM in 2005.
Mr. Crawford holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla, and is a Ph.D. pre-candidate at the University of Michigan.
